WINO Haiku Contest Winners
June 13, 2009 by Doug Haugen
This week, we held a contest to see who could write some of the best wine-related haikus. We read them all today, and it was tough to pick favorites. These poets are competitors.
We ended up choosing two winners, and would like to offer our congratulations to Amber Agne and Kimberly Cook. Here are their haikus:
| Ode to the vino Enlightener of the wit Thief of the paycheck At least with the wine –Amber Agne |
Hi it’s me Syrah I’m dark and mysterious Just like a ninja –Kimberly Cook |
Why did we choose these two haikus? Because they’re fun, plain and simple. It’s true that there were many beautiful haiku submissions. Many writers captured the picturesque, the romanatic, the sexy, the mysterious, and the charming natures of wine. The cool thing about the 5-7-5, though, is its versatility, just like wine. Even though it’s an ancient and revered form, it can be used in these modern times not only to display an ethereal mystique, but also to kick back and let the good times roll, just like wine. These two submissions demonstrated that a haiku can be just damn fun.
Here are just a few of the other great haikus that were submitted:
| Legs that just won’t stop A nose of charming beauty I’ll take a full case –Tom Norwood |
Hints of lavender A nose of cigar boxes? My legs are wobbling –Michael Stusser |
||
| Press the grapes gently Let the miracle take place Angels get their share –Mike Anderson |
glorious summer! ready to open. like this riesling, finely chilled. –Evan Jacobs |
||
| Crimson and Amber Temptresses stabled below Drinking their heartbeats –Theodore Sopher |
Wine adds mystery to a woman all ready. Quite a night coming! –Kevin Cole |
||
| From Walla Walla Tap dancing across my tongue Nectar of the grape From the vine to wine Crafting world class wine –Don Shaw |
Each glass tells a tale Breathing deep the aroma Begging me to sip Medium Rare Steak –Melinda Knapp |
We want to thank everyone who submitted entries into the WINO Haiku Contest. We loved reading them all, and congratulate you not only for your writing prowess, but also for your love of the vino. Cheers.
