All together now: “Voo-Vray.” Yeah, Wikipedia has taught me everything I know about French.

I decided to play this little diddy because I had never heard of such a thing, completely misunderstood French wine and am still uncertain on how to read this wine’s label.

Over the next few weeks, I plan on traveling all over the earth, sweeping its soils in search of everything its vines can offer. I plan on accomplishing this feat under a $15/week budget, from my couch and through the Internet and all her glory.

In other words, I’m geeking out on wines of the world purchasable at grocery stores near you and am prompting you to get cultured with me.

After careful consideration, research and lack of a finances, I have chosen a variety of wines from the places I wish to visit throughout this erratic and volatile planet.

Author Rex Pickett speaks of his beloved Pinot Noir as if it’s his fussy, pre-menopausal ol’ ball-and-chain of so many odd years – it’s “temperamental” and “needs constant care and attention.” But you know he loves it/her because “only the most patient and nurturing” will “really take the time to understand [its] potential then coax it into its fullest expression.”

Now that is commitment.

I started my “wine studies” by reading a book written by the wine editor for Food and Wine Magazine. Her whole premise was to teach her neighbor – Rolling Stone Magazine film critic Peter Travers – the basics of wine. The only varietal Travers enjoyed at the beginning of this trial and error was a “fatty Chardonnay.”

The only varietal I knew I did not enjoy was the stereotypical “fatty Chardonnay.”

Pigs in Chocolate

What happens when you mix cured meat, peppered with cinnamon, and chocolate? Salumi’s most excellent selection, “Mole.” This has to be one of the best things to come out of Seattle since Bruce Lee. If you happen upon 309 Third Ave South, be sure to swing in and give it a try.

Last weekend, Josh and I hit the Woodinville wine trail.  Ambitious, we intended to hit as many of the 42 wineries as we could.  In five hours at a sprint-pace, we saw about 15.  So, we’re going back to see if we can set a new record.

Concrete EggI’m not going to tell you much here about the wineries in Woodinville.  You’re just going to have to wait for the first issue of WINO Magazine in June.  (Oh!  The suspense!)  But, I couldn’t resist showing you this.  One of the more interesting things we saw in Woodinville was the concrete egg at Matthews Cellars.  I expected a ridiculous space traveler to come spilling out of it, but it’s actually used to ferment the white wines at Matthews.  The concrete stays a more moderate and even temperature than the stainless steel, and the shape creates convection currents that churns the must.  This means that it becomes unnecessary to punch down the cap, resulting in less human interaction during the fermentation process.  Very cool.

The concrete egg is kept in the back room (as it happens, right next to the restroom), so if you visit Matthews, make sure to take a look.

We’re working day and night in getting our first issue of Wino together and are still on track to have all 10,000 copies out in the first week of June. Pretty exciting stuff! As a preview, the June issue will focus on the Puget Sound AVA, educational material for wine newbs, reviews on Puget Sound tasting facilities, and various commentary on the Washington wine experience.  In the case that you aren’t in the Greater Seattle region or in Grant County, we’ll have subscriptions available here on the site in a couple weeks time. Keep checking back!
